BACKGROUND TESTING

Some final development work of LED headlights took place at the Army Cold Regions Test Center near Fairbanks, Alaska, where technicians rigorously tested the LED Headlamps and reported on their effectiveness.

“The LED headlamps we’re testing are much easier on the eyes”, wrote one evaluator.

“Despite their brightness, they should last through the 20- to 30-year lifetime of military vehicles,” wrote another, commenting “The LED headlights provide daylight clarity. On the spruce trees up here, every needle stood out, unlike the incandescent lamps that glowed like mere candles in comparison.”

The 7-in round white LED Headlight meet or exceed all applicable Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements and all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) pertaining to headlights.

The new LED headlamps can replace any standard 7-inch round headlight within 24 volt applications. They can be aimed using standard mechanical aiming equipment.

“Advanced headlight design adds safety and value to vehicles, as well as the widest array of design and engineering possibilities, since the small size of LEDs enables them to be seamlessly integrated into even the most sophisticated tractor design.”

Each headlamp uses ten LUXEON LEDs as its light source. The LED light output is brighter than traditional glass beam headlights, resulting in greater light projection.

The LEDs in the headlamp produce a crisper, whiter light output than even the brightest halogen sealed or bulb-replaceable lamps available today. While a typical headlamp may be rated to last 400 hours,  LED Headlamps are expected to exceed that by as much as 50 times.

The LUXEON technology, which is the latest diode technology from Philips Lumileds, used in Headlamps will offer improved visibility over conventional incandescent as the color temperature of the assembly is around 5000 degree K, far closer to the sun light than incandescent or halogen lamps.

New generation of headlights with OSRAM LEDsRevolution in exterior car lighting: the worldwide first SUV with LED-headlights A new era has dawned in automotive lighting. The Cadillac Escalade Platinum is the first automobile in the world to be fitted with LED headlights as standard. OSRAM LEDs perform all the functions in the headlights supplied by Hella – low beam, high-beam, daytime running light, position lights and side marker lights. The luxurious sports utility vehicle (SUV) will be launched in 2008.As a technology leader in automotive lighting, Hella KGaA Hueck&Co has equipped the new headlights entirely with light emitting diodes in the typical vertical Cadillac style. The innovative headlight manufacturer opted for high-power LEDs from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. Each headlight contains seven OSTAR®-Headlamp LEDs – five for low beam and two for high beam. Daytime running light is provided by dimming the low beam. This means there is no need for an extra light source. This intelligent solution is only possible with LEDs. Each headlight also has a position light with white Advanced Power TOPLED®s and a side marker light with yellow Power TOPLED®s. High-luminance light sources The OSTAR®-Headlamp LED was developed specifically to meet the requirements of Hella, the headlight manufacturer. It is among the brightest LEDs for use in the automotive sector. With a color temperature of 5500 Kelvin, much higher that the 4000 Kelvin of xenon light, these tiny light sources create a light with the same color impression as natural daylight. The OSTAR® is particularly robust and can withstand ambient temperatures from -40° to +125°C. Even when placed near a high-power engine it will continue to provide excellent performance. Reliable partners in the automotive sector OSRAM Opto Semiconductors and Hella have been working together for many years on a variety of projects. “Helping to create lighting solutions for automobiles is part of our core business”, said Wolfgang Lex, Head of the LED business unit at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. “In our cooperation projects with manufacturers advanced headlight designs have gained in importance in recent times. Because LEDs are so small, designers have almost unlimited freedom so they can clearly differentiate from competitors.”

LED powered headlamp prototype for Golf 5Hella wins award for headlamp with OSRAM LEDs Hella KGaA Hueck&Co has been presented with an innovation award at the Barcelona Motor Show 2005 for its prototype headlamp developed in cooperation with Volkswagen. The LED headlight is a study based on the VW Golf 5. It provides the functions of dipped beam, high beam, direction indicator and daytime running light, all with LEDs.Plastic lenses in a honeycomb arrangement give the headlamp a distinctive appearance. Also special LEDs from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors provide perfect illumination. The dipped beam is produced by a shovel -shaped reflector and four of the seven honeycomb segments. The other three segments come into play for high beam. All seven segments are also used for the daytime running light, but in this case the LEDs are dimmed. Underneath the reflector there are six LEDs in a line. These are used as the direction indicator. Hella is using specially developed groups of LEDs for the headlamps. Their high output comes among other things from the tried and tested thin-film technology developed by OSRAM. This technology produces "top-lookers" that emit almost all the light generated out of the top of the LED. The white light color is produced by conversion, with the yellow converter located in the encapsulation material above the blue chip. LEDs allow designers to create new shapes and arrangements for headlamps. Their modular design and wide variety of optics provide an excellent basis for entirely new styling. Apart from the design aspects, the long life of light emitting diodes is of enormous importance. Headlamps can now be produced that last as long as the vehicle itself. The development of the white LED has led to a number of solutions that until recently would have been unthinkable. This prototype headlamp already achieves an output of around 1000 lumen, and therefore matches the performance of current xenon headlamps. In the USA, LED headlamps are already approved for use for main light functions in accordance with the SAE standards in force there. In Europe, or the region covered by the ECE regulations, approval is not expected until 2008. Further development of the LEDs, their ever increasing performance and improved thermal management make mass produced products a distinct reality by then.
